El Centro de la Raza sponsored a trip to the 18th Annual Mariachi Conference last week hosted by Wenatchee High School’s Mariachi Huenachi. Over 400 Latino youth converged from throughout the region to be immersed in the music, culture and instruction of Mariachi. Students were taught by industry professionals (Mariachi Las Divas, an all-female Grammy award winning mariachi) and had the opportunity to strengthen their ties to students from Wenatchee. An article from the West Seattle Blog highlights the success of the Mariachi group at Chief Sealth International High School and shows how multicultural and extracurricular activities can promote student engagement and success. Many of the students in the Mariachi group are active participants of El Centro and Proyecto Saber and we are proud to support their passion to pursue this part of their heritage.

Estela Ortega also traveled to Washington State University in February to deliver a keynote speech at the Gabriel Cardenas scholarship banquet. El Centro de la Raza works to foster meaningful relationships across the state as well as in our own city.
