Governor Ferguson signs bills prohibiting individuals from using false law enforcement identification, banning law enforcement from hiding identity with masks

Governor Bob Ferguson signed two important pieces of legislation at a press conference organized by his office at El Centro de la Raza today: One banning law enforcement impersonators using fake badges or other insignia (House Bill 2165) sponsored by Rep. Julio Cortes, and another banning law enforcement from hiding their identities by wearing masks (Senate Bill 5855) sponsored by Senator Javier Valdez. We believe these efforts increase accountability amid growing concerns about masked immigration enforcement operations.

After the Governor signed these bills into law today, Washington State is the only state to currently ban all levels of law enforcement from wearing face coverings. Many elected officials were present including Speaker of the House Laurie Jinkins, Senator Rebecca Saldaña, Rep. Sharon Tomiko-Santos, Rep. Chris Stearns, Mayor Katie Wilson, community leaders from across the state, immigrant community members, and a multi-racial coalition of people who support immigrants.

AG Brown co-leads amicus brief defending birthright citizenship at U.S. Supreme Court

Attorney General Nick Brown is co-leading a multistate amicus brief filed today defending birthright citizenship at the U.S. Supreme Court, standing up to President Trump’s illegal effort to rewrite the Constitution and overturn federal law.

On his first day in office in 2025, President Trump issued an executive order to end birthright citizenship for countless children born in the United States to immigrant parents, in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Section 1401 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Groups of states immediately filed two lawsuits challenging the order, one in the Western District of Washington and one in the District of Massachusetts. Both suits were successful, repeatedly obtaining nationwide preliminary injunctions that blocked this executive order from ever taking effect.
