Connecting Our Elders

“It’s more than a place for resources—it’s a hub of connection, culture, and support. We’re grateful for everything El Centro has done for us.”
Sisters Kathy and Erlinda
“Before turning to El Centro de la Raza, we participated in programs at the Filipino Community of Seattle Center. But the long commute on public transportation became a burden—both physically and financially,” shared sisters Katherine (Kathy) and Erlina.
Enrolling in the Senior Hub program was a game-changer for them. “Living on Beacon Hill, we’re within walking distance of El Centro, which makes attending programs so convenient. Sometimes, we walk together, or we take the bus for a much shorter trip. Their weekly transportation assistance through Orca Cards has also relieved a financial strain for us.”
The benefits went beyond logistics. “Through the Senior Hub, we’ve made wonderful new friends from diverse cultural backgrounds. It’s been so enriching to exchange stories, learn about other cultures, and share our own. The multicultural community here feels so warm and welcoming.”
The sisters highlighted the incredible staff as a key part of their positive experience. “Raquel, our fitness instructor, is amazing, and Franz from the Food Bank is always so kind. He goes out of his way to keep us updated on resources or events we might like—he knows us so well! We also love Ivan on the piano and how connected we feel to everyone in the hub, staff from the first floor to the third floor.”
Their experience enrolling in the program was smooth and stress-free. “It was easy for us to sign up, and since then, we’ve enjoyed participating in various special events like the Home Electrification Fair, Cinco de Mayo, and even book signings, like the one with Luis A. Miranda, Free Legal Clinic, and fun events like the Building the Beloved Community Gala.”
The sisters emphasized how much they appreciate being part of the El Centro de la Raza community. “It’s more than a place for resources—it’s a hub of connection, culture, and support. We’re grateful for everything El Centro has done for us.”
Providing Stability for Families: Building Affordable Housing, Creating Thriving Communities
Published December 17, 2024
“El Centro de la Raza didn’t just provide housing—they helped us find stability, community, and build a foundation for the life we dreamed of,” shared The Escobar Family.
“Our biggest challenge was turning our dream into reality—a dream to provide a better, stronger future for our children,” shared Father Emmanuel, reflecting on his family’s journey. “Moving to the U.S. involved endless research, planning, and difficult sacrifices, including separated for months from my family. It was painful and lonely, but we kept going.”
Beyond the physical comfort, the family experienced a profound emotional shift. “After years of living in fight-or-flight mode, I finally felt safe and secure. It’s hard to explain the relief of knowing my family is in a place where we can grow and thrive.”
The warmth and encouragement of El Centro’s housing team also left a lasting impression. “They gave us hope every step of the way. Even when we felt nervous and uncertain during the wait, they cheered us on and made us feel supported. They truly wanted us to succeed.”
Today, their teenagers, Alex and Vane, are thriving in El Centro’s Roberto Maestas After-School Program and summer youth services. Emmanuel and Luz Maria credit the affordable housing program not only for providing a safe home but for opening doors to opportunities that will shape their children’s futures.
“El Centro de la Raza didn’t just provide housing—they helped us find stability, community and build a foundation for the life we dreamed of,” the family shared.

Early Childhood Development: Supporting Growth and Self-Sufficiency
“My biggest challenge as a parent was keeping up with the resources and information needed to support my daughters’ development. I often felt like I wasn’t doing enough, even though I knew I was trying my best,” shared a participant in El Centro de la Raza’s Kaleidoscope Play & Learn Group.
Enrolling in the program was a turning point. “The Navigator Supervisor, Daniela, provided expert guidance and reassurance. She not only shared tools and information for my daughters’ education but also helped me realize it’s okay to ask for help. I felt supported, and my confidence as a parent grew.”
The results were transformational. “My girls began learning self-sufficiency, playing and tending to their needs without depending on others. I’ve seen a positive change in how they interact with learning toys. They now understand the concept of learning through play and are truly thriving.”
The supportive environment made a significant impact. “What I loved most was the people. Daniela, in particular, has been wonderful, warm and professional that my daughters adore her. The entire team is charismatic and professional, making it easy for my family to feel supported.”
Enrollment was surprisingly smooth. “There was no waitlist, which was a huge relief. It’s rare to find programs like this with such accessible support.”
The participant expressed gratitude for how Kaleidoscope Play & Learn has not only supported her daughters’ growth but also strengthened her confidence as a parent. “El Centro de la Raza has been a game-changer for our family.”
