SAVE Act Community Update
There has been a whirlwind of changes in federal politics. As an organization rooted in the democratic process, we want to stay focused on the biggest threats to our rights as a community.
One issue getting a lot of attention right now is the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility America Act). While it’s been in the news, it can be difficult to understand exactly how it could affect our rights as voters.
At its core, the SAVE Act would change how people register to vote and update their information. Some of the biggest concerns include:
- • Millions of eligible voters could be at risk of losing access to voting due to paperwork issues. For example, if your name is spelled slightly differently across documents, you could be flagged or removed from voter rolls.
- • Many married women and others who have changed their names could face barriers if their current ID does not match their birth certificate.
- • Put large barriers to methods that have shown to increase voter participation. Most noticeably would decrease access to mail-in ballots, ballots in other languages, and threaten voter registration volunteers with felonies if mistakes are made.
- • Federal agencies, like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), could play a larger role in reviewing voter records, raising concerns about how personal data is used and increasing the risk of eligible voters being wrongly flagged.
El Centro de la Raza (The Center for People of All Races) strongly believes communities are built by neighbors who stay informed and take care of each other. That’s why we’re creating space to learn together and better understand the issues shaping our lives.
Join us and other community partners on May 7 at 6:30 PM for a virtual conversation about the SAVE Act with Congressman Adam Smith on Zoom.
We’re honored to welcome Representative Adam Smith, who will give a 30-minute presentation breaking down the SAVE Act, why it’s receiving so much attention, and what it could mean moving forward. There will also be time for questions, and you can submit your questions in advance through the registration form.
This is an opportunity to get clear, accessible information and stay connected to what’s shaping our communities right now.
